This term, our class of grade eleven students read David Young's critically acclaimed play "Glenn," a timeless masterpiece conveying the progression of Glenn Gould through the use of four distinct personalities. We were intrigued by the genuine dialogue and brisk pace throughout. A major element of the play is Young's use of pop culture references to better relate to not only the readers, but also the audience. Andrew Savory, Kyle Kim and I chose to create this website for the display of twelve thematic elements linked to "Glenn". We have covered a wide array of fundamental topics in many different areas of pop culture, including Barbara Streisand, Candy Hearts, Gandhi, the Iron Curtain, the New York Times, Idea of North, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Steinway & Sons, the Goldberg Variations, Valium, and the New York Philharmonic. At times, the four-character buildup of the Prodigy, Performer, Perfectionist, and Puritan may seem a bit tedious. However, we feel that the inclusion of pop culture references bridge the gap between Gould’s mind and the reader’s perception of his thoughts. Nearly all of our exhibits represent important segments of both the play and Gould’s life experience. Gould lived a life feeling trapped within his emotions, which resulted in external neurosis. Despite the derailment of his brilliant career at a young age, his music epitomizes the powerful and diverse styles of great classical pianists in the twentieth century. “The Iron Curtain of Gould” is dedicated to the memory of a brilliant musician and Young’s wonderful and strikingly accurate interpretation. - Nick Medline (Head Curator) - Andrew Savory (Curator, Tech Creator) - Kyle Kim (Curator, Tech Co-ordinator) |
