Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was the spiritual leader of the Indian independence movement and resisted tyranny. His determination led to civil rights movements around the world. He led a life filled with principles such as truth, nonviolence, vegetarianism, and faith. He fought for religious unity and created great change and awareness. I could list off these accomplishments for hundreds of words, but what strikes me is the number of people that have followed Gandhi’s influence. Martin Luther King and James Lawson learned from Gandhi in their push for nonviolence. President Obama has repeatedly mentioned the inspiration Gandhi has provided through the power of ethics. Perfectionist: Death. Gandhi lived face to face with death. Variation Six is concerned with “Turning Away,” or bravery. Gould is turning away from the ball, from school, from fears, and from society. Many of these are brave but foolish, and Young concentrates on the brave element, and how the prodigy made the right decision in taking these risks. Gandhi is mentioned to put a value on bravery, as he is the ultimate example of living a courageous life. At the end of the variation, the prodigy states that he is headed north, and this tells the reader that Gould’s brave choices will have a positive influence on his life.
