Ferruccio Busoni was a legendary pianist who is remembered for his superb interpretations of Bach. He was a child prodigy and made his debut at the age of seven. He was committed to teaching young pianists and worked with many notable musicians. Bach and Liszt heavily influenced his music, and many of his works were based on Bach’s pieces. Busoni died of a kidney failure at the age of 58, but his musical contributions will last forever. Von Karajan: There is no other road for you to travel. You know, I heard Busoni at the height of his career, in 1922, just before he died… Performer: Busoni… Von Karajan: … that was thirty-five years ago. I have heard no one better in the intervening years, until tonight… Glenn desperately needed comparisons for the readers and audience to understand Gould’s ability at the piano. For Von Karajan to bestow such praise on Gould, we gain an understanding of Gould’s talent. It gives Gould’s works validation, as a comparison to Busoni greatly pleased him. As the perfectionist says “There are moments in life when one understands what it is one is really doing.” He goes on to describe this experience with Von Karajan as “transforming.” The reference to Busoni is important as it fills Gould with a sense of importance and happiness.
