Barbra Streisand is one of the most successful female entertainers in history and has sold 140 million albums worldwide. Over the course of a long and critically acclaimed musical career, she has notched forty Grammy nominations and won a staggering fifteen of these awards. To add to her incredible accomplishments, Streisand earned two Academy Awards (for Best Actress and Best Original Song). She worked with Neil Diamond, Donna Summers, and Tony Bennett in between recording albums, and added to her iconic career. No female artist has come near to achieving Streisand’s cultural prominence. She was the only woman to be listed as an “Artist of the Century” by the American Recording Industry. The American Recording Industry even went to say that “(Streisand) has never been out of the limelight.” Streisand has managed to leave an unparalleled legacy in the entertainment world. Her concert fundraising helped boost Bill Clinton into the office, and she has been an avid supporter of the Democratic Party, even going as far as mocking George W. Bush during a concert skit. She made a memorable unannounced guest appearance on Saturday Night Live, and has been referred to in Friends, Family Guy, South Park, and The Simpsons. Mark Masnick used Streisand’s name in describing the Internet phenomenon where an attempt to remove a piece of information only leads to wider publicity. The result was the “Streisand effect.” Prodigy: I’m going to chart my own course. Performer: Think ‘horizon line.’ When you look into my eyes you feel like you can see forever. Perfectionist: Barbra Streisand! Performer: Wrong side of the galaxy. Imagine an outpouring of emotion that’s cool to the touch. This section from Variation Three shows Gould’s obsession with Streisand. I find it remarkable how Young was able to take some of the important figures in Gould’s life and place them in tension-filled scenes throughout Glenn. The use of the Streisand reference is justified in this situation, as Young explores Gould’s normality and how he too can adore a pop cultural icon. He admires Streisand and later on in the variation, implies that listening to her music provides a near escape from the troubles in life. By: Nick Medline Technology By: Andrew Savory |
